A Legacy of Honour is the precursor to Elizabeth Moon’s The Deed of Paksenarrion presented in one volume and combines the two novels Surrender None and Liar’s Oath.

A Legacy of Honour is the story of the folk hero Gird and his immediate legacy in freeing the land of Finaarenis from the magelords of Aare. Apart from a three page prologue to the Liar’s Oath there is no mention of Paksenarrion in Gird’s story – this is a standalone series and in this reviewer’s opinion a better crafted one than the blockbuster of its progenitor The Deed of Paksenarrion.

A Legacy of Honour presents two distinct cultures in mutual incomprehension of each other, with one group visibly subservient to the other. The differences are drawn with a light but convincing hand and illustrate the depth of thought that Ms Moon has expended in her world building for this heroic story. Nor are the characters neglected, especially Gird. While in later books in the Paksenarrion cycle Gird has risen to the status of a demi-god here he is a rude and simple rustic, struggling with the fact he has risen above the habits of deference and acceptance that are the common lot of his kith and kin.

A Legacy of Honour is a very satisfying read and underlines why Elizabeth Moon has a legion of devoted fans. Read it, you’ll be glad you did.
